Dorothy Miller
WELCOME TO NOW HEAR THIS Stories, Information, Strategies about Hearing Loss By Dorothy C. Miller, D.S.W. I hate having a hearing loss. How about you? I became a hearing loss advocate after almost 20 years with hearing loss. I had a terrible, life-changing, experience with an audiologist in a respected institution. It cost me a year’s worth of frustration, confusion and grief. Only after I went to a new audiologist and she fixed the problem in an hour, did I realize how much my ignorance led to my distress. I joined the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), subscribed to the many good sources of information on the internet, and attended the Great Lakes Cochlear Implant Support Group speaker series once a month. I read lots of books. Suspecting that others were experiencing difficulties because of what they weren’t told or didn’t understand, I began interviewing people with hearing loss about their experiences. Their stories will appear in my blog posts over time. More stories will follow, along with suggestions for better communication, some of the latest information about resources for people with hearing loss, and relevant research findings. Not every post you read will include “new news” for you or be relevant to your situation. I encourage comments. My purpose is to share stories and information that you may not get elsewhere, and to try to avoid sounding like a cheerleader. No false encouragement but sincerely presented ideas for “better living with hearing loss.”
